It is a very useful extension but in some themes it is hard to distinguish (under the toolbar itself) a "q" from a "g". Maybe if the toolbar was a little bit wider. This could help to show more of the characters being analyzed by the user.

Wider? You can resize the translation area using the gripper to the right of the window..

Hey. Must say I'm very impressed with this extension. It really shows how one good idea can cut out so much time. I'm used to copying Japanese text into JWPce to get the meaning of the 1000 or so everyday kanji I don't know, but this makes it almost instant. Fantastic.
I just hope this doesn't hinder my kanji learning by making it *too* easy. Well done Brian.
Jon.

Ya, I've gotten a little lazy learning characters too, when I can just let the mouse translation think for me

It would be nice if Hanzibar would show only the words it has translations to (specially on tooltips). It's no use seeying the same word as the one you are selecting, but with no translation And the tooltips become annoying... Anyways, this is a great tool. Thanks for it !

very interesting tool; i can see it being extremely useful.
downsides: it tries to translate individual character which for japanese is not very useful. In terms of japanese translation, you may want to consider only translating the kanji (chinese characters). Translating the kana characters is like translating the individual letters in a word and by themselves don't mean anything.
Similiarily looking up individual kanji characters can be useful, but can i look up words that have several characters in them? (ie: they have 2 chinese characters) if not, that's totally understandable.
Also, the ability to turn the lookups on and off might be useful (for example after browsing a chinese or japanese site and using this useful extension... then browsing an english site, it can be rather cpu intensive to always be doing the lookups when it's not needed.
at any rate, still a very interesting and useful extension ^_^

Well it does look up multi-char phrases - look for the "(phrase)" in the translation. In a future version I'll be moving the (phrase) to the beginning and listing the component chars below as I did for the Chinese version.
As for single characters - the EDICT dictionary has translations for single Kanji, Hiragana, and Katakana characters; it must be worth showing in some cases, and harmless in others...
You can easily turn off the HanziBar by right-clicking any toolbar (try the red HanziBar button). The next version will disable translation including tooltips when its hidden.

> moving the (phrase) to the beginning and listing the component chars below yeah, that sounds great i didn't notice that phrase section at first, but very nice =) > translations for single Kanji, Hiragana, and Katakana characters single kanji is really useful the same as when i'm trying to read chinese... but i'm not sure about single hiragana and katakana... actually, i can see it useful when it describes what a particular grammatical particle means. anyone else have any input on this? > HanziBar by right-clicking any toolbar sorry, i didn't quite understand what you meant. do you mean by hiding that toolbar? Thanks for your replies Keep up the great work =)

Of course Hanzi Toolbar is a toolbar. Could there be a possible customization/toggle that would enable to display it as a panel on the left side of firefox? There's moji extension for japanese that displays this way.

It would be a lot of rework, perhaps a future version.
It seems the dictionary display is better suited to a toolbar than a sidebar tho.
