It would be great if multisyllabic words could show up in tool tips (i.e. 中国 rather than just 中).

I could probably make bigger/multiline tooltips (with an option for smaller ones, as tooltips annoy some people).
But if one line was the limit, would you rather see the phrase than individual characters?

Future versions will include better tooltips, and I'll be improving the english recognition for prefix/suffix (-er -ist -ly -y etc). If you *really* want to add words of your own to the dictionary you can edit it youself (not the exact path - your machine will be a little different): Windows XP:C:\Documents and Settings\YourLoginName\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\d90edl8h.default\extensions\{23c56ccb-a404-4bf9-abea-5e65acc46e90}\cedict_ts.u8 On Linux:file:/home/yourLoginName/.mozilla/firefox/rtetjh0.default/extensions/{23c56ccb-a404-4bf9-abea-5e65acc46e90}/cedict_ts.u8 Any changes you make to the dictionary should be sent to the creator of the dictionary you're using so that other people can benefit: (Chinese CEDICT) www.mandarintools.com/submit.htmlwww.mdbg.net/chindict/chindict.php?page=worddictsubmit(Japanese EDICT) www.csse.monash.edu.au/%7Ejwb/edict.htmlI'll be periodically updating the HanziBar versions with updated dictionaries. You can always replace them yourself. A better solution of course, would be for me to add a "personal dictionary"; how important is that to you?

How about an option that makes you able to change the font size?

Font size choice is a good idea.
For now, the default windows text size is used: on XP that's changed through the Display Settings Control Panel.

How can I select a different dictionary on a mac?
Also, if you're looking for some ideas I suggest you check out "popjisyo.com" or CJKware's tooltip.
Great extension!

Sorry, I haven't tested at all on a Mac, only Linux/Windows. Are you unable to see the choices on the menu? PopJisyo is really cool. It requires you to be online tho, and to send it any pages you're reading. That popup is pretty, but it can get annoying Also I expect its limited by space to phrases a few characters long. And....I don't think it does English -> Chinese...

I'd rather see Hanzibar open-sourced, so that I could contribute proposed patches directly, rather than playing the beggar, but you asked, so here's my suggestion and most personally interested feature request: Make the font size adjustable.
It would suffice for me personally if Hanzibar used the default font setting for the encoding of interest, or at least honored the minimum font size setting, but a bigger/smaller option in the main menu would be ideal, in conjunction with response to the ctrl-+ and ctrl-- keys. I think the keys should only affect hanzibar when the bar is focussed, so that page font size and bar font size are independent. I also think the bar font size and tooltip font size should both be affected by a single control, ideally.

My working version of the next release already has a fontsize choice menu.
And lots more.

I read Chinese terribly so this is a really cool tool for me. My suggestion is that it would be nice if you could select a dictionary to load automatically when you open your browser (or when you unhide hanzibar, since I usually close it to save real estate when not using it.) That way people won't have to select Chinese-English each time if they never use the Japanese to Englsih dictionary. Also, it would be nice if you show or hide the hanzibar with a button click. Maybe a button could be added in the row of buttons with the forward and back bar. That would be awesome. I love this tool.

Hi. First let me say that HanziBar is great. I too have a small suggestion. I can think of reasons that it might not actually be possible, but it would be cool if it could at least attempt to provide a translation for the alt-text of images.
Anyway, just throwing that out there, thanks for all your hard work.

Loading the dictionaries automatically is a problem because each new FireFox window would load a huge dictionary, and slowly. You'd have to wait each time a link opened in a new window. Also each would require lots of memory, and I've seen problems loading the dictionary in more than about 2 FireFox windows.
Pages opened in new tabs are the same window - no problem.
The button idea is a good one. I'll see about adding one to drag onto the Bookmarks Toolbar. Until then remember you can always right-click on the red HanziBar button to turn it off (and on again by right-clicking on most other toolbars).

It already translates text under images. What is alt-text? If you mean OCR (optical character recognition), I'm working on that too, but it might take a few years

Alt-text is a parameter in the html image tag that specifies what the browser should show if the image file itself is unavailable. It's usually either a description of the image or often, when the image only contains text, it will be the same text shown in the image.
You can see it in Firefox if you right-click on an image and hit Properties. It might be a useful way to at least partially translate some images that have the same text they contain listed as the alt-text.
Of course, OCR would be super-cool too... ;D
